How To Size A Fast Pitch Softball Glove
By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to size a fast pitch softball glove. This sport is growing in popularity, so it is essential to find the correct glove for you. With a proper fit, you'll be catching fly balls in no time.
- Determine what position the athlete will be playing. Some positions require a unique glove--for example, first basemen have gloves with little or no padding in the palm, while outfielders have a glove with a large web, enabling them to quickly remove the ball from the glove. Finally, pitchers and third basemen have a glove with a closed web, in order to provide additional support.
- Measure the gloves. Use a tape measure to determine the distance from the top of the index finger of the glove, to the heel of the glove. If the player is an infielder, they should choose a glove which is between 12 and 12 1/2 inches. Outfielders should pick a glove between 13 1/2 and 14 inches. Finally, if the player will be playing a variety of positions, they should choose a utility glove, which is typically between 12 3/4 and 13/ 1/4 inches long.
- Try on the glove. It should feel snug, but not too tight. Place a softball into the glove, and try to grip it. If the player can comfortably grip the ball, the fit is correct. Be sure to try on a variety of gloves before making a final decision, in order to find the perfectly fitting glove.
