How To Size A Snowboard

By: Kathryn Gierok

By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to size a snowboard. Like when choosing skis, sizing a snowboard is based on a variety of factors, including height, skill levels, and shoe size.

  1. Determine the style of board you will use. Freeride snowboards are typically chosen by beginner snowboarders, and are good for general use. In contrast, freecarve boards are uesd to make deep and wide turns at high speeds, and are often used by more advanced snowboarders. Finally, backcountry boards are similar to freecarve boards, but provide a higher level of stability.
  2. Evaluate your height. Place the snowboard on its end--the end of the properly sized snowboard should come up to your mouth. Be aware that depending on the type of snowboarding you plan on doing, you may need a longer or shorter board. Consult with a snowboarding expert to evaluate your needs.
  3. Make sure that your snowboard is of the right width. If a snowboard is too narrow, it will be difficult to maneuver. The width of a snowboard should be similar to that of your boots. Make sure to consult with a shop pro to find the snowboard that is perfect for your size and skill level.
  4. Test a variety of boards to find the one that works best for you. Choosing the right board will ensure both safety and fun on the slopes, and will provide an altogether better experience. With the right board, you'll be tearing up the slopes in no time!
