Jewelry items are just as susceptible to counterfeiting as money, and knowing how to spot fake gold chains may provide you a little piece of mind when looking for a bargain. There are a variety of methods that can be used to determine if a gold chain is fake or real.

Things that you will need:

  • Magnifying glass
  • Jewelry cleaner
  • Magnet
  1. Look closely at the gold chain clasp. Use a magnifying glass to examine the clasp and the rings next to the clasp. Many times gold plating will not adhere to the surface of the small rings in this area.
  2. Clean the gold chain. Fake gold chains are easily identified with a thorough cleaning. The jewelry cleaner will turn fake gold to a green, black, or brown color. Occasionally, the fake gold will peel off the metal chain shortly after a good cleaning.
  3. Hold a magnet next to the gold chain. If the chain moves toward the magnet then it is fake gold or gold plated. The metal used in fake gold chains is attracted to the magnetic field.
  4. Check with a jeweler. Many jewelers are able to spot a fake gold chain immediately. They may even check it for free or at a minimal cost.
  5. Purchase a gold testing kit. Check with your local jeweler or look online for a gold testing kit. This will help you determine if the gold is genuine without any doubts.

Tips & Warnings:

  • Gold chains that are made in the United States are stamped with a marking that specifies the weight of the gold. It is recommended that you do not rely on these markings to determine the gold chains authenticity. Counterfeiters are able to replicate the 10K, 14K, 18K, and 24K stamps.
