The is a rising abuse with housing benefit claims that becomes a subject of fraud making the authorities more vigilant on how to spot housing benefit fraud. The beneficiaries of the housing benefit are able to avail financial assistance in paying house rent and many abuses this program by the government through fraud and dishonest claims but there are tell tale signs and ways to help spot housing benefit fraud that can help eradicate fraudulent claims for housing benefits.

  1. One can suspect a housing benefit fraud with erroneous entry on the application form by the applicant.  A common trick by some applicants is to declare having many children in order to get priority for the grant of the housing benefit. Some applicants may not disclose any property they own and provide false information regarding their financial background and capacity. These instances already constitute a housing benefit fraud.
  2. You have reason to suspect for a possible housing benefit fraud when there is the possibility that the beneficiary has other properties. It is common that some would defraud the manifestation of their assets such as concealing ownership of another property in order to collect rent for personal income generation purpose from their own property while availing of the housing benefit for a lesser cost on other property. Some also rent out their right for tenancy to others while collecting higher rental fee than that agreed with the landlord.
  3. When you learn that the beneficiary of the housing benefit has died and its family members continue to occupy the rented house, a housing benefit fraud is possible. Some family members continue to avail of the benefit through the commission of a housing benefit fraud by not letting the landlord know about the death of the housing program beneficiary. This involves wrong tenancy claims where the family members continue to live on the property without having the right anymore to do so as the death of the beneficiary terminates their right to enjoy such benefit.
  4. Report to the proper authorities when you suspect a possible housing benefit fraud. Among the grounds that constitute the fraud are the ones mentioned above which primarily involve concealment of information that may prejudice the applicant’s eligibility for the program and misuse of the benefits of the beneficiaries of the housing benefit program. You may call the Housing Authority concerned for the conduct of proper investigation to know whether a housing benefit fraud is committed.
