Learn how to spot imitation designer watches to prevent purchasing a counterfeit watch. Counterfeit watches are sold in brick and mortar stores, internet auctions and various internet retailers. Learning how to spot fake watches can help you save money and avoid embarrassment.

  1. Check the price on the designer watch. If the price is too good to be true, you may have an imitation watch. Often times, certain brands of watches are not allowed to be marketed below a minimum advertised price. When the price is too low, the watch may be gray market, counterfeit or sold through unauthorized channels.
  2. Verify the documentation and packaging material integrity. Genuine high end watches will usually come with a box, along with paperwork. The instructions and warranty will usually be printed on heavy weight paper. If the documents for the watch are printed on light weight paper, there is a good chance the watch may be an imitation.
  3. Check the weight on the watch. Genuine watches will have a solid sturdy feel to them. Imitation watches are usually made with a low grade steel and feel significantly lighter. Check on the manufacturer website if you need to find out what the true weight of the watch should be.
  4. Verify that the store is an authorized reseller. Use caution when purchasing the watch from an internet website. Check with the manufacturer to make sure that you are dealing with an authorized reseller. If you do not purchase the watch from an authorized dealer, your warranty may be voided. This may be true even if the watch is a genuine product.

By following the tips above, you can greatly reduce your chances of accidentally purchasing a replica designer watch.
