It is easy to learn how to start boxing if you are interested.  While you will need to put considerable work into the sport if you wish to be competitive, you can engage in boxing for fitness or recreational reasons as well.  Take the following areas into consideration to start boxing.

  1. Purchase the right equipment.  Every boxer will need boxing gloves; you will need to consider if you would like some for heavy bag work or training, as well as competition if you are interested in entering the ring.  Get a good pair of hand wraps as well in order to protect your hands under your gloves.  If you want to train at home, you will need at least a heavy bag, and can consider other bags such as a speed, uppercut, and double-ended bags.
  2. Get into shape.  Boxing is a grueling sport that requires strength and conditioning.  Develop your strength on the weights and in your punches.  Train hard for your conditioning, as boxing is centered around one's endurance, especially if you want to compete at any level.
  3. Learn the fundamentals.  Joining a boxing club or taking lessons is a good idea.  You need to learn footwork, basic defense, and the mechanics of the main punches used in boxing.
  4. Train and develop boxing skills.  In time you will be able to string together combinations, as well as becoming comfortable mixing defensive and offensive techniques.  You will be able to harness these skills with time and focus on training.  Soon you will be able to compete or improve your skills more with lessons or a club.
