How To Start Training For Motocross
Understanding how to start training for motocross will help you do well in competitions. Motocross is a sport that involves racing and performing stunts off-road on a type of motorcycle or dirt bike. When you start training for motocross, you are getting yourself in physical shape to complete races and stunts, as well as practicing these aspects of the sport.
- Warm up before any training session. When you start training for motocross, it is easy to get overly excited and jump right in. However, you need to warm up your body first. Start with some stretches of your arms, legs and back. Then, take a brisk walk for about ten minutes. If you are practicing on your dirt bike, ride easy for about fifteen minutes to get the feel of the bike and the terrain you are practicing on.
- Focus on strength training. To be able to handle a dirt bike on tough courses and terrains during races and when performing stunts, you need to have upper body strength. This means that lifting weights is a necessary part of training for motocross. Focus especially on back and core muscles. Do not lift for endurance. Do heavy weights with slow reps to build muscle.
- Focus on small areas at a time when riding. When you approach a course you are using for training, you might think it is a good idea to just run through the course. However, each stunt, turn and jump has its own challenges and weak spots. Go through each different section of the course over and over again. Once you have perfected a turn, for example, move onto the next jump. Continue like this until you have mastered the entire course, one piece at a time.
- Take a break before going through the course altogether. This break could be an hour or you could wait until the next day. When you do ride through the course, pay attention to any areas where you still need work. For example, if left turns are giving you trouble, concentrate on those pieces of the course for about thirty minutes. Then, ride the entire course again. Continue until you are happy with your performance in all areas.
- Time yourself. Ask someone to come along with you when you start training for motocross to time you as you complete the course. Have a stopwatch ready for the person you bring. Compare your times each time you complete the course. This will help you get faster and improve your maneuvering.
