How To Stop Drinking Without AA

If you have a drinking problem you may want to learn how to quit drinking without AA. AA stands for Alcoholics Anonymous. To succeed in AA you will need the help from a sponsor and the ability to get up in front of people and admit that you have a drinking problem. The point of AA is to get support from a group of people who know nothing more about you than what you care to share with them.

To quit drinking without AA, you will need:

  • Will power
  • Personal support system
  • Desire
  1. Desire. You don't need a team of people cheering you on to quit drinking. You merely need the desire to quit. You must want to quit drinking or it will never work.
  2. Why. You must be able to understand why you drink. When you figure out why you drinking you will need to find a way to change those things in order to quit drinking. For example if you drink to relax then you will need to find another way to relax to replace the drinking. If you drink when you are upset or frustrated you will need to find a new outlet for your emotions.
  3. Support system. Not everyone needs the support of other people to quit drinking. However it can be helpful if you find yourself slipping back into your old habits. Even if your support systems only has one person make sure it is a person you can call day or night for help.
  4. Willpower. Quitting drinking is much like going on a diet. Your willpower to not take a drink must outweigh your want.
