How To Stop Pop Ups
Need to know how to stop pop ups? If you've spent more than even a few minutes browsing the web, you'll inevitably find yourself wanting to know how to stop pop-ups from polluting your computer screen. Pop-ups, or pop-up ads, are a major nuisance for users but a potential source of income for website owners who choose to pay for their bandwidth by bringing web traffic to their advertising sponsors by any means necessary. While the effort to stop pop-ups is a perpetual game of cat and mouse, it is in fact a game which you, the besieged user, can easily win. Most web browsers have some type of pop-up blocking ability; we will discuss the specifics for two of the most popular browsers below.
To stop pop-ups, you will need:
- A suitable internet browser
- A computer with an internet connection
- Stop pop-ups using Mozilla Firefox. The way to stop pop-ups via Firefox is to click on the Tools menu on the top bar of the browser screen. Select and click "Options" and click on the "Content" tab in the Options window. Make sure that the "Block Pop-Up Windows" checkbox is checked. Also click the "Exceptions" button to look over the list of sites that are allowed to open pop-up windows on your browser. This will be useful if you have the Pop-Up Blocker feature on and you're still seeing unwanted pop-up windows.
- Stop pop-ups using Internet Explorer. The newest versions of Internet Explorer have their own ways to stop pop-ups as well. To access this feature, click on "Tools" and you should see the "Pop-Up Blocker" menu item right away, as it should be the second entry on the menu. Click on that and if the next option you see is "Turn on Pop-Up Blocker," click that. If you have it turned on and you're still seeing pop-ups, click on "Pop-Up Blocker Settings" and see if the offending site is in the "Allowed sites" list. Be sure that you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later if you are intent upon using Internet Explorer to stop pop-ups.
