How To Stretch To Get Rid of Neck Pain

So you want to learn how to stretch to get rid of neck pain. There are few things that are more annoying than neck pain. We often take our necks for granted until suddenly we cannot even turn our necks to the side. Neck pain occurs frequently in individuals who sit in front of a computer monitor, desk or drive for a significant part of their day. When you stretch to get rid of neck pain, your muscles will loosen and you'll be able you to move your neck better.

  1. If the neck muscles are tight and need to be loosened, you should stretch to get rid of neck pain. You will see a reduction of pain and be able to move it better.
  2. The sternocleidomastoid muscle, also known as SCM, has two branches that run from the middle of the collarbone to an area right behind the ear. SCM enables us to move our heads from side to side and allow us to nod our head up and down. In order to stretch to get rid of neck pain turn your head to the right side as far as you comfortably can. Then take your hands and place one hand on the forehead and the other hand on the back of your head. Move your head back to a forward position while gently pushing the hand that is on the forehead into your forehead. Hold this position for five seconds and then turn your neck toward the left to repeat the stretch. Do three to five repetitions on each side.
  3. The upper traps and levator scap form the triangle that is located just above the shoulder blades. In order to stretch to get rid of neck pain, bend your head to the side as if you are trying to lay your ear on your shoulder. Take the hand from the same side and place it on your head to cause slight resistance. Hold this stretch for five seconds and repeat the exercise three times on both the right and left side of your body.
  4. The extensor muscles in the neck give you the ability to lean your head back and helps you turn your head sideways. When you have pain and stiffness at the base of your head, the extensor muscles are tight. To loosen these muscles, take your head and bend it down so that your chin touches your chest. Grasp your head with both of your hands and gently provide resistance as if you are trying to lift your head back up. This stretch should be held for five seconds and repeated three times.


To effectively stretch to get rid of neck pain, these exercises should be done everyday. In fact, you may have to do it several times a day when you first begin to stretch to get rid of neck pain.


When placing hands on your head to provide resistance make sure you do not push too hard. Causing pain will not help your neck in any way.
