Stars like Taylor Swift have skyrocketed to fame and now you’d like to know how to succeed in the music business for yourself. The first thing to keep it mind is that it’s a business. Lots of money is invested in an artist. While music is considered a craft, it’s also about having a good business sense of the entire process of how the music industry works.

  1. Practice makes perfect. This principle is true for athletes as well as with musicians. Whether you compose, sing or play an instrument, constantly practice to succeed in the music venue.
  2. Perform before a live audience. You can spot a nervous signer or musician a mile away. Make the stage your friend and if you are confident in yourself it will show while you perform your music. Seriously, you have nothing to lose.
  3. Protect your original music. Register your music at the copyright office online or through mail. If you plan on succeeding in the music business you need to learn to protect your own investment and not wait for others to do it for you.
  4. Network with demos of online. Have a music demo or video demo and promote yourself. To succeed in the music business today online venues such as YouTube and Facebook makes networking easier than it was decades ago.
  5. Conduct yourself professionally. At every turn, always be polite and professional. If you behave like a diva from the get-go, you won’t win any points with executives.
  6. Be original and unique. The last thing a record label is looking for is a knock-off version of a current singer. Have your own hook and style to your music and you’ll stand out over the rest. Executives are looking for originality.
  7. Know the record labels and publishers. If you want to sing for a certain label, know what they are looking for. Understand what publishing companies are about so when you interview with them you’ll have a list of pertinent questions to ask them.
  8. Understand the business end of music. Read books on the subject. Talk to other musicians who’ve recorded a song or two. Get a general understanding of how the legal stuff works or you’ll find yourself signing a record contract that robs you blind. To succeed in the music business you have to know the music business.
  9. Get a manager and an entertainment law attorney. Manager will help promote your music. Attorney will help protect your music.
  10. You are your best promoter. Whether you have an agent/manager or not, you are the best promoter you can have for yourself. The success of your music career hinges on how determined you are to get your music heard.

Twenty years ago, in order to get noticed in the music industry you had to audition or play in small venues. Today, with the Internet, you can network, promote yourself as an individual as well as your music. To succeed in the music business is to be heard, so as they say, work it!
