How To Swing A Golf Club
Learning how to swing a golf club seems awkward at first. You feel off balance. Most beginning golfers miss the ball entirely or only advance it several feet with their first few swings. You have to learn and practice sound fundamentals in order to play golf well. But it will seem like there are too many things to remember. By focusing on just a few key fundamentals and working mastering each of them, you can make learning the game of golf less complex and more enjoyable.
- Start with a short swing and a short club. To get the feel of the golf swing, take one of the shorter length clubs such as the 9-iron, and practice short swings. Take the club back only to the point your hands are just above your waist. Your goal is to make contact with the ball, not worry about how far or straight it goes. When you gain confidence with these mini-swings, gradually swing back further. And then try the longer clubs, working your way up to the 3-wood and then the driver.
- Don’t hurry your backswing. Take the club back slowly and low to the ground for the first two feet, to get the club on the correct swing plane. A basic step in how to swing a golf club is to start the club on the correct path.
- Shift your weight during the backswing. As you take the club back, your weight should shift from your left side to the right side. This allows a full shoulder turn and coiling of muscles that will release and create power on the downswing. Make sure you don’t sway onto your right side with your weight going outside your right foot. Maintaining your balance is part of learning how to swing a golf club.
- Don’t rush from the top. Many beginning golfers think they need to swing a golf club harder than they actually do. They end up rushing the downswing, which ruins the timing between the hands and the legs that you need to hit accurate shots. Some good golfers even pause for an instant at the top of the swing to make sure the beginning of the downswing is smooth.
- Keep your head steady. Focus on the ball as you take the club back, and don’t let your head move as you swing back down and contact the ball. You can’t learn how to swing a golf club properly without keeping your head still during the swing.
- Hit the ball and follow through. As you swing down, you move your weight back to the left side. You should stay balanced as you follow through, with your hands ending in a high position, above your shoulders. As you follow the path of the ball toward the target, you’ll feel the wonderful sense of accomplishment that now you know how to swing a golf club.
