If you set up your PS3 with HDMI cables when you first got it, and now need to use it with a television that doesn't have HDMI inputs, then you need to learn how to switch video settings on PS3 without HDMI cables. It is not uncommon to take the PS3 home from college or over to a friends house and find out that their TV only has old inputs, instead of the HDMI inputs. The PS3 will default to the video output that you used when you first set it up, so if you change outputs without first changing the video settings, you will have to reset the video settings before you can see anything on the screen.

  1. The first step of switching video settings on PS3 without HDMI cables, plug the PS3 into the wall and into the TV. Make sure that all of the connectors are tight and in the right sockets. The colors of the cables should match the color of the connectors on the back of the TV.
  2. Flip the power switch on the back of the PS3. This will give the unit power, but don't touch the front yet. Wait until the front light is red. If the light turns green, then the PS3 is powering on and you need to hold the front power button until it turns off.
  3. Press and hold the front power button for 5 to 7 seconds. The PS3 must be off when you do this. This process will return the video settings to their default settings (for which you do not need HDMI cables) and allow you to see the screen again. You have now switched video settings on PS3 without HDMI cables.
