Learn how to take off the steering wheel in a 1999 Cadillac Escalade by following these simple steps. This knowledge can help you avoid the repair shop and save you time and money. Keep in mind when attempting to remove the Escalade’s steering wheel that this and many other vehicles are equipped with air bags. Before working on or near air bags, be sure to disconnect the battery and remove the air bag fuse first. You will also need to purchase or rent a steering wheel puller in order to perform this task. Most auto repair stores will loan you this tool for a nominal fee.
What you’ll need:
- Steering wheel puller
- Flat blade screw driver
- Ratchet with 21mm socket
- Safely deactivate the air bag system. First, turn the steering wheel so that the steering wheel buttons are facing the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the air bag fuse from under the rear seat, then allow the system to discharge for about fifteen minutes.
- Remove the air bag. Use a flat blade screw driver to gently pry the air bag module from the steering wheel. Remove all electrical connectors from the back of the air bag and the steering wheel buttons.
- Take off the steering wheel. Remove the center nut using a ratchet with a 21mm socket. Use a steering wheel puller to push the Escalade’s steering wheel off of the column. Follow the instructions that come with the steering wheel puller for the best results.
