If the sweet fresh wax smell has succumbed to the stank of low tide, it's time to learn how to take the wax off a surfboard. It is a good idea to replace your wax a few times a year, especially if you plan on traveling or if seasonal water temperatures vary drastically. Besides, no one likes old wax: the grip is gone and it looks like crap. The following is a simple explanation of how to take the wax off a surfboard.
- Wax Comb
- Rag or Paper Towels
- Fresh Water
- Plenty of sunshine
- The easiest way to take the wax off a surfboard is to heat it up. The best way to do this is to leave your surfboard out in the sun for about twenty minutes. Very hot climates need less time and cooler climates require more time. A hairdryer can be used on a cloudy winter day, but use extreme caution, as excessive heat can destroy a board. Solar heat is the easiest and safest way to take the wax off a surfboard.
- After the wax is nice and soft, take out a wax comb and begin to scrape the wax off the board. If you don’t have a wax comb, you can use an old credit card to take the wax of a surfboard. If the wax has been properly melted it should be quite easy to scrape most of it off the deck.
- The wax comb should remove the majority of the wax, but there will always be a thin layer of wax remaining. To remove this layer, dab a bit of acetone on a paper towel or rag and wipe down the board. The wax should be visible on the towel. Aside from the sun, acetone is the most important tool to take the wax off a surfboard.
- You should be able to tell when the wax is gone by running your hands over the deck of the board. If the deck feels smooth, the wax is gone. Wipe the board down with a clean towel and fresh water to remove any remaining acetone or dirt.
Your board should be completely wax -free at this point. Obviously you don’t need any fancy products to take the wax off a surfboard. You can take the wax off a surfboard with common household items and a little help from the sun. Now that all the wax is off your boards, your new slick stick is ready for a fresh coat or its eBay photo shoot.
