How To Teach Your Dog To Roll Over
Need to know how to teach your dog to roll over? With a little bit of patience and persistence, you can teach your dog to roll over on command. Ideally, you should teach your dog to roll over after teaching her to sit, stay and play dead. However, this is not a requirement, and if you have not taught your pet these tricks yet, you can still teach her to roll over, but it may take a little bit longer. Teaching your dog to roll over is not only a fun trick, but it will enhance your dog's willingness to be obedient and help her in learning future tricks.
- Start with your dog in a down position. Make sure that your dog's belly is touching the ground and her weight is distributed evenly through all of her legs. Pet your dog to help her relax before you teach her to roll over.
- Hold out one of your dog's favorite treats or a favorite toy. However, make sure your dog remains in the down position. This may be difficult to do if your dog is not trained to stay, and it can make teaching your dog to roll over a more difficult task than it should be.
- Hold the treat or toy just out of your dog's reach and start to move it in whichever direction she seems to feel more comfortable with. Do not attempt to hold your dog down; this will only discourage her, which will make it more difficult to teach your dog to roll over.
- Continue moving the treat or toy until the dog has rolled over. Repeat the process until your dog recognizes the command and appears comfortable executing the roll over command.
