Want to know how to thicken beef stew? Thickening beef stew must be done in a timely manner. Thickening a beef stew is a matter of personal taste. Some like the sauce of their beef stew to be loose to where it taste a bit like soup. While there are others who like to thicken up the sauce to use it as a garnish with rice or mashed potatoes. The list below is a list of optional ingredients that you can use to thicken up beef stew.
To Thicken Been Stew You Can Use:
- Corn Starch
- Mashed Potato Flakes
- Drain the amount of beef stew juice off of the stew and place it into a sauce pan. This separates the juices from the actual meat and vegetables. Bring the stew juice to a consistent boil.
- This next step can be modified to your taste. When thickening a sauce, you must use a thickening agent. In this case, you have the choice of adding flour, corn starch, or mashed potato flakes. When using flour, you will want to combine 13/ cup of water with 2 Tbsp of flour then add this to the sauce. For cornstarch, use 1 Tbsp cornstarch and make a slurry by mixing 1 oz of cold water with the cornstarch to make a slurry. To use the instant mashed potato flakes, simply add these to the stew. Whatever method you use, itcombines with the sauce that is already thin and begins to thicken up the sauce. Either one of the options above will work, and of course the more you add the thicker your sauce will become. Add either of these options in small increments.
- Lastly cut the stove down to a low simmer and eventually remove from stove top. This gives the sauce a heated sensation and as it cools it also thickens. Keep stirring the sauce until the thickness is to your satisfaction.
