How To Tie A Fly Fishing Knot

Any avid fisherman will need to know how to tie a fly flishing knot. Fly fishing is quite a different beast than regular sit-on-your-butt fishing. Fly fishermen are often found standing in the middle of a river with special knots on their line and those knots can make or break a successful fishing trip. While some people may be wary about having to learn special knots to do what they can do with regular knots, fly fishing knots are not too difficult to complete.

To tie a fly fishing knot, you will need:

  • A lure
  • A fly fishing rod
  • Line
  1. Insert the line into the hook and wind the line. There is only one place to put the line in the hook, so shove the line through, eight inches through the eye, which is the circular end of the hook. Winding the line can be a bit tricky, especially if you have bigger hands. You will need to hold the line taut between both hands and wrap the line that went through the eye around the line not through the eye. Wrap the line about five times. Make sure there is enough space to loop the line through close to the eye, kind of like tying a shoelace.
  2. Thread the line through the knot. After you wind the line five times, take the leftover line and thread it through the loose loop you made at the eye. This basically knots the hook to the line.
  3. Tightening the knot. The only thing left to do now is to pull the hook to tighten the knot. The loops you made around the line will tighten up at the base of the eye. Cut off the leftover line from the hook and you are done.

There are many different kinds of fly fishing knots, but this one is one of the more popular ones. It is not as hard as it sounds. It is almost as easy as tying a shoe.
