  • a rope or cord of some sort
  • something to tie the knot to, like a rod or another rope
  1. Begin by taking the rope one turn around whatever you are tying the rope to. Once you do this, you should have both ends of the rope in your hand with the object encircled by the rope.
  2. Cross the rope over itself. To do this, hold one end of the rope stationary. Take the other end of the rope and lay it across the stationary portion of the rope.
  3. On this step of learning how to tie a half hitch knot, you will actually complete the act of tying the knot. Once the rope it crossed over itself, take the end that you crossed over the stationary portion and push it through the loop. Pull this end tightly to complete the half hitch knot.
