For the new parents out there, here are instructions for how to tie your shoe laces. It’s one of the first things we teach our toddler when they start schooling. There are around 30 ways on how to tie shoe laces, but only a few are well known. The criss cross technique is the most used way of lacing shoes because of its easy to follow steps and simplicity.

To tie your shoe laces, you will need:

  • Pair of Shoes

  • Shoe laces

  1. Start by inserting the shoe lace on the first row of eyelets. Both ends should arise from both of the bottom eyelets and the middle of the lace should run across underneath the eyelets. Check if both ends of the shoe lace are the same in length.

  2. Take the shoe lace from the right eyelet and insert it on the second left eyelet. Insert it through the eyelet by passing the shoe lace underneath.

  3. Get the lace from the left bottom eyelet and insert it through the right second eyelet. The lace should pass through the eyelet underneath as well.

  4. Repeat steps two and three, moving up to the next eyelets. Continue lacing the shoe until all the eyelets are fed. The outcome should show the shoe lace arranged criss cross or crossing each other over the shoe tongue.

  5. Finish lacing the shoe by tying a bow knot to lock the laces. Repeat all steps for the other pair of shoes.

Tips/Warnings:

  • The criss cross method of lacing shoes may not be suitable for shoes with thin upper tongue, because it may cause wrinkles which can damage the shoes overtime.

  • There are other ways of lacing shoes that looks similar to the criss-cross method, among them are the loop back, over under and double helix

  • Though using colored laces adds fashion to your shoes and accentuates the criss cross pattern, it might leave color stains around the eyelets or on the shoe tongue. The original lace of the shoe still works best.
