How to Train for Baseball

How to train for baseball is an essential aspect of the game for players at the high school, college, and professional levels. Not many baseball players prior to the high school level will follow a training regimen since they are do not anticipate playing at higher levels. For those baseball players preparing to play at the next level of the game, this article will help you put together an excellent training program.

  1. Weight Lifting Baseball players learning how to train for baseball should begin with a weight lifting program. The weight lifting program should include the arms and the legs so that the player's abilities to throw and run improve each day. Weight lifting for baseball should be done five days per week during the off-season and only two-three days per week when the player is in season.
  2. Running Along with a weight training program, baseball players learning how to train for baseball should run during the off-season and during the season. Running during the off-season should occur three-four days per week. The running program during the season should occur twice per week unless the player is instructed to run more by his coach.
  3. Conditioning Once the player has the weight lifting and running programs setup the player will need to begin a conditioning program if learning how to train for baseball. This program should include the following exercises: crunches, sit-ups, squats, ups-downs, Supermans, and planks.
  4. Practice Makes Perfect The most important skill to train for baseball is for the player to practice his position as much as possible. If the player is a catcher he should learn how to do the following:  block baseballs in the dirt, throw out runners at second and third, pick off runners at first by throwing behind a batter, call pitchers, relay signals to the pitcher, prepare for a bunt, and block the plate.
  5. Hit the batting cage. Aside from practicing defense, the baseball player should also go to the batting cages every chance he gets to improve his swing and learn how to hit various pitches such as fastballs, curveballs, sliders and changeups.
  6. Build Arm Strength by Throwing A baseball player should also put together a throwing regimen to build up his arm strength when learning how to train for baseball. Begin throwing at a short distance with another player and slowly expand the throwing distance each time you throw. By the end of the throwing regimen, the player should be able to hit his partner in the chest with a throw from 120 feet or more.

If these tips are followed, the player will improve in a matter of months.
