Want to learn how to train a dog to sit? Teaching dogs tricks can be quite enjoyable and teaching a dog to sit is one of the oldest tricks in the book. Teaching a dog to sit takes patience and a willingness to spend some one-on-one time with the dog. Sitting is a natural occurrence for a dog but teaching it to do so on command is not. Dogs are quick learners however and sitting is simple enough. This article will walk you through the process of teaching a dog to sit. Like anything else, there are numerous methods to teach your dog to sit. This article offers one of those ways to teach a dog to sit.

To teach a dog to sit you will need:

  • Dog leash
  • Dog treats
  1. Place a leash on the dog and tell it to sit. The dog’s reaction will vary based in the dog’s personality. You will want to cinch up the leash so there is no leeway. Tell the dog to sit again, in a more stern voice.
  2. Pull the leash to straighten the neck (do this gently). Tell the dog to sit again. This time push the dog’s rear with your hand in to a sitting position. Praise the dog. Tell him to sit again, and again aid it with a gently hand.
  3. Praise the dog and give him a small treat. Tell the dog to sit once again. Depending on it’s reaction you may need to cinch up the leash or push down on the dogs rear. Repeat this process until the dog understand the command.
