Not all hunters will agree on how to train a hunting dog to be the best hunter. But, most hunters will agree that training them requires a lot of patience and dedication to making a dog the best hunter it can be. Training hunting dogs can be exciting, but requires a lot of hard work for all those involved in the process.

To train a hunting dog you will need:

  • Doggie treats
  • Electric collar
  • Hunting game meat
  • Voice of command
  1. Pick the type of breed hunting dog you want. Choose a dog that is good for hunting the specific game you enjoy hunting. Not all hunting dogs are the same, it is important to find out about the dog before taking him home to train.
  2. Teach your dog simple commands. You want them to get used to your voice of command. Start them off with commands such as sit, stay, and crawl. Reward your dog after they follow through a command, but don't over reward them.
  3. Teach your dog to hunt by a sense of smell. Allow your dog to sniff and smell the game they will be hunting. Make a trail of this particular game for your hunting dog to sniff out. At the end of the trail have a reward waiting for your dog. This may be new to your dog, especially if it is a young pup. But, they will definitely enjoy the rewards.
  4. Allow your dog to train in the hunting climate. This will allow your hunting dog to receive great exposure to the hunting environment. This will work to your advantage when hunting season comes around. It is important for dogs to feel comfortable in their surroundings.

Most hunting dogs train easy, but it does require a lot of consistency on the trainer's part.
