How To Travel By Train
If you are wondering how to travel by train, you'll be pleasantly surprised that it's a convenient and fun way to travel. It's also easy to book, and there are train stations in more places than you likely realize in the country. Here are some tips to have you boarding a nearby train for your next vacation.
- First, you want to look up possible trains from your home city to your ideal destination city. Also, be as flexible as you can be with your city of origin. If you are willing to drive 30 miles out of your way, you may be able to find a mainstream train that may not be available in your hometown. Amtrak is a great place to start, but you also want to check out other train companies that aren't as popular and expensive.
- Do price comparisons. Although many travel websites like Priceline are more focused on plane travel, you'll find many that have options for train travel. Also, don't be afraid to do comparisons independently. Call up the train companies that service your area, and get price estimates. Go with the one that offers the lowest price, as long as it also offers all of the options and amenities you require.
- Book in advance. Train travel is typically cheaper if you purchase it at least two to three months in advance.
- Pack lightly when traveling by train. Each train company will have its own luggage policies, but less is more when it comes to dealing with luggage at a train station. It's ideal if you only bring along what you can comfortably carry with you.
- Consider traveling by train when making a major move. Instead of dealing with all of the hassle of driving, Amtrak now offers some trains that tote your vehicle to your destination city as well. You just get to enjoy the ride, then have your car when you arrive at your destination.
- Avoid train travel for long trips if you have small children. As restless as children can be on two-hour plane rides, the situation can get much worse on long train rides. If you must travel by train with children in tow, be sure to bring plenty of snacks, games, activities and perhaps a portable movie player with headphones. You'll be happy you did.
- Request a window seat on a train to enjoy scenic views and really see parts of the country that you never would otherwise get to observe. You'll probably want to also bring along a journal to keep track of the train adventure.
