How To Treat Pulled Muscles In Back

When you pull your back muscles, you want to know how to treat muscles pulled in back quickly. Often pulled muscles in the back occur due to overuse or pulling heavy materials. This causes pain in the back, inflammation as well as muscle spasm. If you have pulled back muscle, it is important that you start treatment immediately. You can treat your condition with home treatment and if not resolve seek care from your medical provider later.

Things you need to treat pulled back muscles.

  1. Take anti-inflammatory over the counter drugs. Anti-inflammatory over the counter medication relieve the pain and swelling that occur due to pulled back muscle. The market offers several brands for you to choose from. Select your favorite brand and follow the manufacturer’s direction.
  2. Obtain an ice or cold pack. If you do not have an ice pack handy, take a bag of refrigerated vegetables instead. Apply the ice pack to the affected area for approximately 20 minutes interval. Do this every three or four waking hour for 72 hours after the incident. Cold treatment on the affected area helps to reduce the swelling as well as the pain. When you wrap the ice pack, do not apply directly to the skin instead take the ice pack, wrap it in a plastic wrap or towel, and then place on the pulled back muscle. Doing this helps you from having frostbite. 
  3. Change your position regularly. Sitting or standing in the same position for a long time during wake hours will stop stiffness, which usually increases pain.
  4. Sleep in a comfortable position. You do not want to sleep in a position that will aggravate your back. If you are having difficulty resting, lay on your back and bend your knees using pillows to support. Another position to try is taking a pillow, places it between your legs, bends your hips, knees, and lay on your side or on your stomach.
  5. Place a heating pad on the injured muscle. Do this after the swelling has diminished. The heat helps by relieving your pain and increasing blood circulation and loosens up your injured muscles.
  6. Start exercising after the swelling and pain diminished. This is difficult because most people are afraid that they would re-injure the back. However, exercising is essential to prevent injury stiffness. You do not have to undertake any major exercise regimen. Simple take a four or five minutes walk every couple of hours. Does pelvic tilt exercise also to strengthen the lower back?  To do this exercise, lay on your back bend your knees and place your feet in the flat position on the floor. After you in the correct position, contract your ab muscles slowly, and press the lower back to the floor holding this position for approximately 10 to 15 seconds and relax the muscles. If you experience any pain, stop and try later on maybe after a day or two.

Tips and Warnings:

  • When you pull your back muscle, it is understandable that you may want to rest and avoid exercising.
  • However, sometimes bed rest only makes the pain and discomfort worse so try not to lay in bed too much.
  • If your pain has not improved in one week or your pain becomes worse, contact your medical provider immediately. 
  • Additionally, if you experience numbness or lose control of your bladder or bowel, this is a sign of a severe problem and requires medical review. Therefore, contact your doctor.
