How To Treat Stress

Many people struggle with how to treat stress and certain situations cause physical and mental strains on the body. When this happens, the body goes into a “fight or flight” response, and stress kicks in. Some examples of stressors are a hectic home life, problems at work or the ability to manage finances. A combination of these situations can become overwhelming and that’s when stress can take over.

  1. Recognizing Symptoms. Every person deals with stress in a different way, but some mental symptoms of stress include tension, fatigue, irritability, lack of concentration and difficulty sleeping. Many people may not realize they are stressed because it has become such a part of their lives. Stress can also cause physical symptoms, such as an upset stomach, muscle tension, difficulty breathing and dryness of the mouth. Many people can have these symptoms from time to time and never recognize the cause.
  2. Relaxation Techniques. While it’s difficult to know how to treat stress in difficult times, relaxation is one technique that is used by many people. When used daily, it can be very effective at managing stress. Taking time each day to do something enjoyable, such as read a book, listen to music or visit with friends is also helpful.
  3. Exercise. This is another effective way to treat stress and many people use it in conjunction with meditation or deep breathing. There are many books and resources on stress management, which can be found at your local library or bookstore. Exercising for 30 minutes a day is a great way to lower stress levels and stay active.
  4. Medications. Medications can be used to temporarily relieve symptoms, but they will not eliminate the causes. Some medications, such as Xanax can be habit forming, which can cause even more stress. It’s recommended to only take these types of medications under the supervision of a physician.
  5. Support Groups. These groups provide an opportunity to talk through stressful situations and participants can learn valuable stress management skills from each other. Someone who specializes in this area usually leads the group and many people find it an effective treatment for how to deal with stress.

Stress can be harmful to the body and it can cause numerous health problems. While learning how to treat stress is not easy, take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. There are many people who suffer from stress and these techniques have helped many people learn to control stress in their lives.
