Learn how to treat tendonitis and restore some comfort back into your life. Tendonitis is the inflammation of the tendons that attach muscles to bones. This irritation can be recognized by limited movement of the joints, painful swelling or redness, or pain when the tendon is under any pressure. Overuse of a particular tendon is the main cause of tendonitis, as can be seen with Tennis Elbow in tennis players. Age is a second cause of tendonitis. Fortunately, when recognized early, tenoditis is easily treatable.
- Cease harmful activities. When tendonitis has been identified, stop any activities that work the affected area. This is the most important part of the healing process. The tendons should be rested for a duration of at least three weeks to give them time to heal. In most cases, ceasing activity and resting will be enough for the tendons to heal themselves.
- Brace the affected area. Wearing a brace on the affected area can dramatically aid in healing. It prevents the tendons from suffering from any excess movement or strain.
- Take or apply anti-inflammatory medications. Either orally taking and topically applying, anti-inflammatory medication can aid in the healing process of tendonitis. These medicines reduce both swelling and pain, making it easier to cope with tendonitis.
- Light exercise. It is crucial to the healing process not to attempt any form of exercise for at least three weeks after immobilizing the affected area. If after three weeks, there is still pain, continue to rest until it completely disappears. If after this set time, however, there is no pain, it is safe to begin to slowly move the affected area little by little. Begin with very light stretches and resistance to the affected area. Slowly rehabilitate the affected area in this way for another three weeks. It is important not to rush into anything.
- Slowly ease back in. After at least three weeks of completely rest and at least three weeks of very light exercise, it is safe to begin easing back into normal activities. However, before doing anything that utilizes the affected area, take extra time to slowly and carefully stretch and warm up the muscles to avoid re-injury.
