If you’ve had a Sony PS3 for a while then you may already know how to troubleshoot PS3 firmware 3.01 problems. Actually the firmware update 3.01 was a fix to issues for 3.00 but also had its own series of problems. In any case, knowing how to troubleshoot firmware update problems can be very handy if you own a Play station 3. Here are some steps to take in order to perform troubleshooting.

There are two typical problems that can occur from the above mentioned upgrades; 1) "An error occurred during the start operation. (80010514)" and 2) games will not load or will freeze during loading. Here is what to do if either of these scenarios takes place.

  1. Check your Internet connection and make sure that it is stable. If you are using a wireless Internet connection make sure to have at least signal strength of 80%. This will help ensure that the download of the firmware is complete and accurate.
  2. Dust the PS3 regularly. Electronic equipment like the PS3 has a tendency to collect a lot of dust due to static electricity and other symptoms. Run a dry dust cloth over the unit occasionally to keep dust from piling up.
  3. Always follow instructions when installing or updating new firmware. Even if you have installed 5 or 6 updates before by the seventh the instructions will change and everything will go haywire. (Murphy’s Law in action.)

If these steps do not resolve the issue then it probably is due to corrupt firmware and rolling back, in most cases will not resolve the issue. It may require a call to customer service to have the unit repaired or replaced.
