Do you need to know how to troubleshoot USB drives? USB (Universal Serial Bus) drives are some of the most widely used connectors in the modern consumer electronics world. Everything from music players to graphics tablets to audio mixers can be connected seamlessly to your computer through USB. This is why it can be extremely frustrating when a USB drive fails or becomes unresponsive. Fortunately it is possible to troubleshoot USB drives on your own before resorting to paying someone to figure out what the problem may be.
- First, you should check to make sure it is your USB drive that is malfunctioning and not the device you have plugged into it. To begin to troubleshoot USB drives, try removing the device and plugging in a different USB enabled device to see if your computer recognizes it. If the USB drive does not respond to more than one device, you will need to delve deeper into the issue.
- Next, you should check the USB drive under the device manager. This second step to troubleshoot USB drives is fairly simple. To do this, go to Start–>Control Panel–>System and Maintenance–>Device Manager. Here you will find all of the hardware devices listed for your computer, including every USB drive available to you. Click the “+” by the Universal Serial Bus Controllers to reveal the USB drives on your computer. Identify the port that is giving you problems, then right-click and select “Properties”. Under the “General” tab, it should tell you whether the device is working properly or not.
- Make sure USB port's driver software is updated. Another important step when you troubleshoot USB drives. You can do this from the same window by clicking the “Driver” tab and “Update Driver”. You can also roll the driver software back to a previous version if the USB drive failed after an update.
