  1. First, you should check to make sure it is your USB drive that is malfunctioning and not the device you have plugged into it. To begin to troubleshoot USB drives, try removing the device and plugging in a different USB enabled device to see if your computer recognizes it. If the USB drive does not respond to more than one device, you will need to delve deeper into the issue.
  2. Next, you should check the USB drive under the device manager. This second step to troubleshoot USB drives is fairly simple. To do this, go to Start–>Control Panel–>System and Maintenance–>Device Manager. Here you will find all of the hardware devices listed for your computer, including every USB drive available to you. Click the “+” by the Universal Serial Bus Controllers to reveal the USB drives on your computer. Identify the port that is giving you problems, then right-click and select “Properties”. Under the “General” tab, it should tell you whether the device is working properly or not.
  3. Make sure USB port's driver software is updated. Another important step when you troubleshoot USB drives. You can do this from the same window by clicking the “Driver” tab and “Update Driver”. You can also roll the driver software back to a previous version if the USB drive failed after an update.
