Learning how to tune an acoustic guitar by ear can be done with some training and practice. Unless you have perfect pitch, you will have to work at developing the ability to tune an acoustic guitar by ear. Take the following considerations into account to learn how to tune an acoustic guitar by ear.

  1. Make sure that your bottom "E" string is tuned. The lowest string, or the 6th "E" string, is the basis upon which tuning by ear can be developed. Make sure it is tuned precisely (such as by using a device for tuning) in order to learn how to tune the acoustic guitar by ear.
  2. Develop the pitch of the string and the next string. The bottom "E" and "A" strings are the two lowest strings on the guitar. Listen to the interval in the pitch in order to develop a precise handle of the sound. When you are tuning the "A" string, if you have difficulties, simply play the "A" note on the bottom "E" string.
  3. Continue this process when you are ear training. Continue the method, paying attention over and over again to the intervals between the strings. Remember that you can always play the pitch on the proceeding string if you have difficulties. Furthermore, use this method of playing the note on the previous string to ensure that you are tuning the string to the correct pitch. In time, you will notice the exact pitch for each string, enabling you to tune an acoustic guitar by ear.
