Learn how to unlock a BlackBerry Curve if you plan on moving to a different cell phone carrier. BlackBerry devices can be unlocked so you can use your cell phone on a different GSM network. This information can be very helpful if you plan on traveling outside of the United States. If you purchased a cell phone with a contract, the device is usually locked. Cell phone companies do this to prevent you from switching your mobile phone service to another.

Things you'll need:

  • BlackBerry Curve
  • Numerical code: mep2
  1. Contact the customer support department of your cell phone provider. Each cell phone has a unique identifying code. This information is used to differentiate your BlackBerry Curve from other mobile devices. Explain to the customer service representative that you wish to use your cell phone with a different carrier. As long as you have fulfilled your contractual obligations, you should not have any issues obtaining the unlock code for your BlackBerry Curve.
  2. Find the correct menu on your BlackBerry to continue the unlocking process. Make sure that your BlackBerry is powered before you begin. If your battery is low, you may want to plug in your BlackBerry. Use the trackball and enter the Menu on your BlackBerry Curve. Go to the area under Advanced Options which is labeled SIM Card. Once you highlight the SIM card option, use the trackball to confirm your choice.
  3. Enter the numerical code using the BlackBerry keyboard. The first step is to enter "mep2." The screen on your BlackBerry Curve should change and you will see a prompt asking you for the unlock code. Make sure that you enter in the entire code. If you take too long to enter the unlock code, your phone may not properly unlock. If you have done this correctly, a confirmation will appear on the BlackBerry Curve screen.

Your BlackBerry device can now be used on different cell phone carriers. As long as you are using your cell phone on a GSM network, you can use a new SIM card in your BlackBerry Curve. Unlocking your BlackBerry device is also a good idea if you plan on selling your mobile phone.
