Need to know how to unlock a cell phone? Unlocking a cell phone will enable you to use it on any GSM network. GSM networks are any network that use SIM cards for activation. Companies such as Sprint and Verizon are not GSM carriers, so you cannot unlock their handsets.

  1. Write down your SIM card number and IMEI number.  The SIM card number is located on the SIM card which is the small white data chip in the back of your phone.  The IMEI number is printed on the sticker under the battery of your phone.  At this time, remove the SIM card.
  2. Locate your phone's unlock code by typing the make and model of your phone followed by the word unlock into your web browser.  You will be asked to supply your SIM card number and IMEI number in order to have a code generated for you.
  3. Switch your phone on. You will see a message saying “ Insert SIM” at this time enter the code exactly as it is displayed to you. If the code was successful you will see the words “SIM Restriction Off.”
  4. Insert your new SIM card. Once the phone is unlocked, you can use a SIM card from any phone provider.

Many smart phones cannot be unlocked because they do not work by SIM card alone. These phones are called CDMA phones which are programmed from the inside and require the manufacturers software in order to unlock them. This service can only be provided by the manufacturer.
