It’s very important to know how to update TurboTax. TurboTax is a very popular tax preparation software. There is a desktop version that can be downloaded to a computer or installed from a CD. There is also an online version that allows taxes to be prepared without adding anything to a computer. The online version updates automatically; however, the installed versions need to be updated by the user. It is important to update the software to make sure the user has the most recent forms and software revisions.

  1. There are two ways to update the desktop version of TurboTax software. They are update on demand and automatic update. The instructions for both methods are listed here.
  2. To update on demand, open the TurboTax software. At the top of the screen click on "Online" and then choose "Check For Updates" from the pull-down menu. A screen will pop up letting you know that the software is checking for updates. Updates will be downloaded from the internet. Click on "OK."
  3. To use the automatic update, click on "Online" at the top of the screen and then choose "Updater Preferences" from the pull-down menu. Click on "Automatically download updates" (a screen will pop up asking how updates should be received). Click on "OK." If an internet connection is not available, update CDs can be requested from the TurboTax website.

It is a good idea to update the TurboTax software before a tax return is started, each time a return is accessed (if it’s not completed in one sitting) and before a return is filed. For more information on how to update TurboTax please visit www.turbotax.com.
