Learning how to upgrade your motherboard in your computer may not be for beginners. This takes a good deal of knowledge about computer hardware and installation. If you are up to the task, then you will need to find out information on the computer components that are already installed on this computer. There are a lot of different motherboard types, and you will need to find on that is both better than what you are already using and compatible with all of your devices. Follow these steps to upgrade a motherboard in a computer.

  1. Backup the computer and all data that you will need after the upgrade. This is important, because the operating system will not work properly if you change the motherboard.
  2. Find out what type of processor your computer uses. You can start by seeing if it is an AMD or Intel processor. Determine whether it is a 32 bit or 64 bit processor. This will be important when you are looking for a motherboard.
  3. Find out the RAM type your computer uses. This should be on a label on the RAM modules.
  4. Check to see what connection your hard drive uses. You will have to buy a motherboard that uses this connection type.
  5. Check the power inputs on the motherboard from the power supply. The new motherboard should have inputs that your power supply already has, or you may need to buy a new power supply too.
  6. Determine what PCI and other cards are used on the motherboard. These are the cards that attach to the motherboard and are accessible from the back of the computer. The new motherboard will need to support these.
  7. Determine the form factor of the motherboard that is currently installed. You will need to buy another motherboard of the same size, or one that fits in your computer case.
  8. Use a website such as Newegg to find a motherboard with the specific characteristics that were determined in the previous steps. This site has a search feature that allows you to narrow down the choices based on features.
  9. Since you are upgrading, make sure that the upgrade is worthwhile by finding a motherboard that is better than what you already have.
