How To Use Coupons Effectively

One of the best ways to get the most value for the buck is learning how to use coupons effectively when you go shopping. Whether you're buying appliances, consumer electronics or groceries, it is possible to find ways to avoid paying full price on almost any item that you might be looking for. Once you get into the habit of using coupons effectively, it will become less tedious and more of an interesting, fun challenge – not to mention a profitable one.

What you'll need to make the best use of your coupons:

  • Magazines

  • Newspapers

  • Accordion file with labels

  1. Obtain your coupons. Before you go shopping, make a list. From that list, categorize what you're buying, and then search and clip coupons from magazines that pertain to your purchases. Be sure to buy the Sunday edition of at least one dominant newspaper in your area as they will be relatively loaded with coupons.

  2. Organize your coupons. Label your accordion file according to what groups of coupons you're using. For instance, one label for groceries, another for toiletries, etc. Save the front pocket for the coupons you're going to be using on your next trip.

  3. Make a shopping list. Grocery stores and other establishments love people who do not organize. All the coupons in the world can't save you from chaotic or impulse purchases that you did not plan for. Make a list of what you need and stick to it. Then bring with you the coupons that pertain to that list.

  4. Be sure to check for extra coupons in-store. Sometimes you will also find coupons on the product you're buying. Often you can stack these with the savings you've already achieved with your existing coupons.

  5. Vote with your dollars. If you find a store that doesn't allow the use of multiple coupons on one item, shop more often with one that does. Stores have a right to decide their coupon policies, and you have a right to choose whether or not to give them your hard-earned money.

  6. Be vigilant. Make sure the checkout clerk is counting your coupons. When your purchase is complete, check your receipt for accuracy before you leave the store.

Tips:

  • Check manufacturer websites for additional coupons.

  • If you get a grocery store card, you may also benefit from mail that they send you. Don't automatically discard it as junk mail.

  • Get your Sunday paper early. Other shoppers are mining the papers for deals, too, and they tend to run out fast.
