How To Use Gift Card
You got one for your birthday, but you aren't sure how to use a gift card. To use a gift card in the store or online makes shopping a breeze. Follow these steps to learn exactly how to use a gift card.
- Acquire a gift card. Gift cards make great presents and you may have received one for a recent holiday or celebration. If you weren't the lucky recipient, you can always pick them up at local grocery or drug stores, at the actual store itself, or even online. If you are purchasing a Visa or American Express gift card, there may be a fee attached to the card. As you load the card with money, the fee will be added on top of that amount. Be sure to read all of the instructions and information on each card.
- Check the balance. Most gift cards come in an actual card or envelope with the amount written somewhere inside. If you purchased the gift card yourself, chances are, you already know the balance. If you are unsure or don't remember, check the back of the card for instructions. Most gift cards have a number to call. Usually, these are automated systems. Enter the number of the gift card and it will tell you the balance. Also, consider checking at the store's online website, if applicable.
- Use the gift card at the store. Take the card to the store and make a purchase. When it comes time to pay, swipe the gift card like you would a debit or credit card. If your purchase amount exceeds the amount on the card, you will be required to pay for the rest of the purchase in another way. If you haven't used the entire amount on the card, write the balance of the card on the card with marker, if possible. This way, when you go to make another purchase, you will know how much money is left.
- Use a gift card online. Many stores allow you to use a gift card to make online purchases. Visit the store's website and begin shopping. When it is time to check out, look on the final billing page that asks for PayPal or a credit card. If the merchant accepts gift cards, there will be a separate place to enter in the gift card information. Just like in the store, if there is a balance left, you will be responsible for paying it some other way. If the entire amount of the card was not used, be sure to write down how much is left on the card.
Once you use a gift card, you may want use them as your primary form of payment in the store or consider giving them as gifts to those around you.
