Anyone who takes regular trips in a kayak needs to learn how to use a kayak paddle leash.  A paddle leash is designed to ensure your safety by making sure a paddle is always within reach.  Being stuck without a paddle is dangerous and frustrating, but by simply using a paddle leash this danger can be avoided.  The following guide will teach you how to use a kayak paddle leash.

To use a kayak paddle leash, you will need:

  • A kayak
  • A Paddle
  • A paddle leash (purchased or homemade using a cord)
  • Metal snap clip
  • cord lock
  1. The first step in using a kayak paddle leash is making sure the leash is properly attached to the kayak and the paddle.  The snap lock should be securely fastened to your strap eye.  If your kayak does not have a strap eye, the leash can be attached to the deck line.  The cord lock must have enough cord running through it that it is wrapped all the way around the center of the paddle and securely fastened.
  2. When entering your kayak, check that the cord is wrapped securely around your paddle by firmly tugging on it.  Make sure the kayak paddle leash is adequately attached to the kayak by firmly tugging on the cord near the deck line or strap eye.
  3. If the paddle is swept away from your kayak at any point during your trip, use the paddle leash to pull it back towards you.  The leash is elastic, so it may require some force if the paddle is trapped between rocks or in debris.
  4. Now that you know how to use a kayak paddle leash, be sure to use it on every kayaking trip to ensure a safe journey.
