It is imperative for all hat lovers to know how to wash a hat. There is nothing more gross then seeing a person wearing a hat covered with layers of stains. Most people do not wash a hat because they do not know how, and they are afraid of ruining the item.

  1. Read the care instructions. The best way to wash a hat may depend upon the material it is made of as well as the type of embellishments (if any). The easiest thing to do is to see if the manufacturer has listed care instructions inside the hat.
  2. Hand wash the hat. Fill the sink with warm water and a small amount of liquid laundry detergent or shampoo. It is probably a good idea to do a spot test with the detergent that will be used. Take a small amount of the solution and place it on an inconspicuous area and let it set. Observe after thirty minutes. Swish the water around for a minute and then wash a hat by setting it into the liquid. Make sure the liquid covers the hat completely.
  3. Put the hat through the dishwasher. Another way to wash a hat is to place the hat on a dishwasher rack (alone), add dishwasher detergent and start up the dishwasher. If the dirty hat is a baseball cap, there are cages available that the hat can be placed inside in order to help retain the shape. The cap can then be placed inside the dishwasher. Make sure to select air dry.
  4. Hang up hat or place on towel to dry. After you wash a hat, it is never recommended to place it inside a dryer. Too much heat may make it shrink.
