How To Wash A Motorcycle

Learn how to wash a motorcycle and keep your vehicle in better condition. A dirty motorcycle is nothing to be proud of. Washing a motorcycle takes much less time than washing a car or truck. Motorcycles are also very easy to use quick detailing products on.

To wash a motorcycle, you need:

  • bucket
  • car wash solution (high quality, not dish washing liquid)
  • water
  • good quality sponge or wash mitt
  1. In a bucket, make the wash solution. Follow the manufacturers directions. Dish washing liquid is too harsh for washing paint. Specifically formulated car wash liquids are designed to protect the paint while still removing the road grime.
  2. Don't get a lot of wash solution on the motorcycle. Use the sponge and squeeze out some so it's not dripping. Lightly wash starting at the top of a section and go around with frequent dips into the wash solution.
  3. Work down to the lower portions of the motorcycle. The lower parts of the motorcycle will be dirtiest, and will require more frequent sponge dips to keep the debris out of the sponge, which could cause fine scratches in the paint if left on the sponge.
  4. After all portions have been cleaned, start with fresh water in the bucket. Use a clean sponge and wipe off the motorcycle again, removing any remaining wash solution.

Never let the cleaning sponge fall on the ground. If it does fall on the ground, use a new fresh sponge as it will pick up grit from the ground and can scratch the paint.  Don't use the car wash on leather. The leather on the motorcycle should be cleaned with a leather cleaner and protective products.
