  1. Make sure that your skis are compatible with a waxless base. Not all cross country skis can be waxed with a waxless base. Waxless cross country skis are also called "fish scale skis." Waxless skis have a "fish scale" type pattern in the kickgrip component of the ski. The fishscales design is intended to provide the "grip" that a traditional wax would give. Waxless cross-country skis tend to be lower quality skis; definitely do not try a waxless base on expensive racing skis.
  2. Find a waxless base for your cross country skis. There are many different brands of waxless base. You can spend anywhere from $30 to $100 on a waxless base. If you are a recreational skier, there is no need to spend extra money. Look for any type of "glide wax" such as Swix Easy Glide Care Kit. If you don't have any "waxing tools" look for a kit with a base cleaner and a towel.
  3. Prepare your cross country skis. Before applying the glide wax, make sure that your cross country skis are clean. Wipe off any excess dirt with the towel in your kit. Wipe off any snow and allow your cross country skis to become room temperature before applying the waxless base. Make sure your skis are dry.
  4. Read the directions. Your waxless base should come with directions. Read the directions first. Some waxless bases are only intended for a specific part of your cross country skis. Other waxless bases can be applied more liberally.
  5. Apply the waxless base to your cross country skis. Apply your waxless base to the "fish scale" part of your cross country skis. Doing this will help you glide more efficiently. Applying the waxless base to the fish scale area will also reduce dirt and debris that can accumulate in the grooves.
