How To Wear A Beret

By: Kathryn Gierok

By keeping some basic guidelines in mind, you can learn how to wear a beret. A beret is a type of hat that has a snug headband and a soft, fluffy top. While this type of hat has often been associated with the French, it has been worn by a variety of people around the world, including intellectuals, golfers and even military men. Be sure to follow some basic steps in order to pull off a great beret look.

Things you'll need:

  • A beret
  1. Start by finding a beret that fits you properly. Don't worry about the soft, fluffy part of the hat when trying to size a beret. Instead, you must simply make sure that the headband fits against your forehead snugly. If the beret is too loose, it will slip and slide off your head. When you find a beret that fits you well, buy a few in a variety of colors, as you never know when you will be able to find the same quality beret.
  2. Pull the crown of the beret all the way forward, creating a soft "brim." This is one popular way to wear the beret, especially among European golfers. Check the beret out in the mirror. If you don't like the way it looks, try the other methods described below.
  3. Pull the crown of the beret all the way to the right side. This is a look that is most often seen today. Check yourself out again in the mirror.
  4. Finally, pull the crown of the beret all the way to the back. This is the "coffee shop" look and is most often worn by writers, artists and other intellectuals.
