How To Wear A Polo Shirt
Learning how to wear a polo shirt is important as it is one of the most versatile pieces in a man's wardrobe. It can be worn in the winter or summer and goes with just about anything. Typically, a polo shirt is left untucked (unless it is required for work).
- Choose the type of polo shirt you want. A polo shirt's length is correct when your arms are down in a resting position and the bottom of the shirt covers at least to your belt. A polo shirt should be no longer than 1 inch below your pockets. Anything lower takes away from the put together look of the outfit. The same idea applies to the sleeves. Depending on the style, the sleeves may be slightly above the elbow or slightly below, but an extreme in either case is the result of a poor fitting shirt.
- Choose other pieces of clothing to coordinate. Polo shirts come in solid colors as well as patterns. Be sure to choose pants or shorts with will compliment the top. For example, a solid polo shirt looks great with plaid shorts and makes matching easy. With jeans or khakis, any type of printed shirt will be perfect. Polo shirts also come in long and short sleeved versions and vary in the number and style of buttons located in the center.
- Decide what other items belong with the polo shirt. Consider layering the polo shirt with other items from the closet. For example, undershirts work well below a polo shirt. Adding a jacket or sweater on top of the polo can be a great look. Be sure to pull the collar of the polo out.
-
After putting the polo shirt on, be sure that all of the lines match up. In this case, check the buttons that run down the center top of the shirt. Make sure these buttons are lined up with the center of your chest. The collar can be worn turned down. This is the traditional look of the shirt. However, some men prefer to wear the collar straight up, giving a more preppy look. How you wear a polo shirt depends on the look you want and they style you are trying to achieve.
