If you have fun playing poker, you may want to find out how to win poker tournaments. Poker tournaments are available online, at casinos or at local groups where people gather together to play cards. In most cases, the greater the number of people, the harder it will be to win the tournament. You will have to have patience during the early part of poker tournaments, as many players may try to build their chip stack by playing very aggressively. Bide your time, and try to put yourself in a position to win at the end.

  1. Decide which type of poker tournaments to enter. There are often many different poker tournaments to choose from at a given time, depending on where you are playing. If you are at a casino or playing online, stick with the poker games you are most familiar with, and enter the next available tournament for that game.
  2. Once you register for the tournament, find out how many total players there are. Some online tournaments have 1000’s of players who enter. Most casino tournaments have a lot less players, due to the high entry fees. Regardless of where you are playing, it is always a good idea to know how many players there are so you can pace yourself accordingly once play starts. Your goal is to win poker tournaments, but making it into the money is also important. If you outlast a certain number of players, you will win enough cash to pay your entry fee.
  3. Let the maniacs eliminate themselves early. A maniac is a player who bets high no matter what kind of hand they have. Unless you are prepared to go bust, avoid getting into a confrontation with these players. Most of them will get taken out early, and the ones who do not will usually tighten up play as their chips increase.
  4. Mix up your playing style. While it would be nice to have aces every time, you must play inferior hands once in awhile if you want to win poker tournaments. Since you will not be able to see how your opponents react physically during a hand of online poker, it is more difficult to read them to try and determine the strength of their hand. Take a few shots at winning the pot when you play an inferior hand, and if your opponent shows strength, unless you are prepared to go home you may just want to fold.
  5. As the tournament winds down, pick your spots. Try to let the other players battle it out, since one may be eliminated. Every player that loses means more money for you, unless the tourney is winner-take-all. Once you have a strong hand, be aggressive and try to take the other players out. If you make it to the final table, your goal of winning the tournament is within reach.
  6. Watch the chip stacks of your opponents once you make the final table. The small stack players will be desperate to survive, so they may have to start playing low-percentage hands. Pick them off when you have a hand with a decent chance of winning, or let the higher chip stack players knock them out. Stay away from confrontations with players that have the highest chip total, until you think you have the best hand.
  7. Once you are heads-up with the last remaining player, be aggressive. Try to wear your opponent down, and mix up your playing style, to keep them off balance. Do not be afraid to push all of your chips in the pot if you think your hand can win poker tournaments of the all-in variety. Fold if your opponent goes all in and you do not think you can win the hand. If you catch some cards or gain a sizeable chip advantage over your opponent, you may be able to knock them out and take home the big check.
