How To Work Out On A Treadmill

Learning how to work out on a treadmill can lead to a very healthy exercise routine. Most people who have a busy lifestyle opt to exercises on a treadmill because of time constraints, rather than going to the gym or taking a walk or jog outdoors. Here are some helpful tips for initiating a healthy treadmill workout.

  1. Do some stretching exercises before walking on the treadmill. You need to warm up your muscles before subjecting them to the exercise process. This will help prevent your muscles from becoming sore, tired and aching after your treadmill exercise. Stretching is a good way to prepare your muscles for activity.
  2. Begin your treadmill exercise at a low speed. You should begin by slowly walking at a moderate speed of no more than two miles per hour for at least a couple of minutes. Try to make a longer stride to slowly stretch your leg muscles. Then, when you are all warmed up, you can adjust the speed gradually to a faster level.
  3. Increase your progression gradually. It is recommended to stay at one level of difficulty for at least four weeks to avoid the risk of injuring your muscles. People who are in a rush to get the result they want tend to become aggressive with their treadmill workout, which results in a burn out.
  4. To finish your treadmill workout, you need to cool down. Cooling down is a period where you allow your muscles to relax by slowly reducing the stress imposed upon them. It is a big mistake to finish your treadmill exercise by immediately stepping down from the treadmill to sit and relax. Your muscles will become more sore if you do so. The proper way to end your treadmill workout is to slowly reduce the speed and do some slow walking exercise for at least five minutes.
  5. If you aim to lose fat by doing a treadmill workout, you should do low-intensity cardio exercise. Maintain an average level of speed and intensity in your exercise, which will help burn out more fat and help in building muscles. High-intensity workouts may likely cause burn out, and this is not recommended for newbie treadmill users.
  6. Incorporate variety into your treadmill workout. This can be done by increasing or changing the speed mid-way through your exercise. You can also try changing your stride to work out different leg muscles. You can combine walking, sprinting and jogging intervals. Lastly, spice up your treadmill workout by playing heart-pumping music in the background.
