Basically, a good portion of your education is going to be spent writing papers, so it is best to get your practice in now. The good news is that actually, once you develop a good system, it is very easy to write a college paper.
- A good college paper starts with a good thesis statement. In fact, it is virtually impossible to write a paper without developing a proper thesis. So this is where you begin. In simple terms, a thesis statement is basic reason for writing the paper. It will be stated at the beginning of your paper, and it will help your paper have focus.
- Research is the next important step. You cannot write a college paper without properly researching. Just think about it this way: no one wants to read about something you basically made up in your head. That is called creative writing. So be prepared to do a lot of research. The internet has a few great tools, but please, do not overlook the library. Visiting the library is a great way to collect a lot of information from a variety of credible sources.
- After doing your research, and developing a thesis, you will now want to begin gathering your thoughts. Write down a lot of notes. Make an outline. Basically, you want to avoid just trying to write the paper freestyle. Outlining your paper ahead of time will give your paper more credibility. Some people find that it helps to begin with the introduction; they then move to the body, and finally end with a conclusion. You can, however, skip around. The order all really depends on you and how you generate ideas.
- Format your paper properly. When you write a college paper, your professor will give you guidelines on how the paper should be formatted. She will tell you to follow certain guidelines and formats, such MLA or APA style. This is not a suggestion; it is a requirement. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with all the general rules of a specific type of style. You should learn the in and outs about in-text citations, bibliographies, headers and sub headers.
- Proofread your college paper carefully. Before you turn the paper in, it is important to proofread it. Spell check is not enough, so read it carefully. Have a friend read it. A good proofreading trick is to start at the end and read each sentence individually. This will help you catch a lot of proofreading mistakes.
