1. How committed? - Both Zac and Vanessa had been with each other for a few years. They seemed to reach such a closeness of love and care for each other that it was like, "Where do you go from there?". Neither of them felt like they were ready to even think about getting married because of how young they are.
2. Time to take a break - Since Zac and Vanessa weren't ready for marriage, they both mutually decided to take a break from the relationship. Nobody broke up with anybody. There were rumors of Zac Efron being overly friendly with other girls - and who knows. It was definitely decided by the both of them to take a break as a couple. They most likely are still going to stay really good friends. Just not the kind of friends who get all close, and kissy-swap-spit-close, etc.

It's kind of weird for them not to be an item since the public got so used to them being an item. They did earn the nickname "Zanessa". As cheesy as it is, couples earn nicknames like that—a combination of their name put  together—almost as a badge for having stayied committed for so long. Maybe we'll see them hanging out with some of the same groups of friends together. Or maybe they will choose to avoid the paparazzi all together. They were a cute couple, and seems like they will be great friends too.
