If you're looking to improve your lacrosse goalie skills, this article will provide you with all the drills and tips you need. The goalie position requires a unique skill set in comparison to other lacrosse positions. The goalie is the last line of defense on a lacrosse team, and you'll be well prepared for your next game if you diligently practice these drills.

  1. No Stick Goalie. While you will usually be using your stick to catch or deflect most of the shots taken on goal, practice deflecting shots using only your arms, legs, and body. Make sure you are fully padded during this lacrosse goalie drill.
  2. One Handed Goalie. Similar to the first drill, you'll rarely be in a game situation where you'll be using only one arm. However, practicing catching and deflecting shots using only one of your arms will increase your arm strength and accuracy as a goalie.
  3. Colored Balls. Gather any number of lacrosse balls, making sure each ball is a different color. Have a partner take shots at you. As the ball approaches, yell out the color of the ball. Making saves is not important with this lacrosse goalie drill, as it is designed to get you in the habit of looking at the ball rather than the stick or the shooter.
  4. Outlet Passing. As a lacrosse goalie, you are not simply responsible for making sure the other team does not score on your goal. You also need to be able to get the ball to your teammates after you make a save. For this lacrosse goalie drill, you will need three partners. Divide yourselves into two teams. You will want to try to get the ball to your teammate, who will be covered by the other two players.
