Learn about international travel with children guide to get the most from your trip abroad. Traveling to a foreign country with children is an excellent way to literally show them the world. The actually travelling part can be a challenge if it's not approached in a smart fashion. Depending on the age of children, international travel can present unique challenges but also room for great lasting experiences.

To do international travel with children guide, you will need:

  • Passports and visas
  • Immunizations, as needed
  • Guidelines and rules
  • Emergency phone numbers
  • A few words in the language where you'll be traveling
  • Favorite toys and games

Steps

  1. Get passports and visas, if needed, for the children and adults. Each person traveling to another country has to have a passport. Apply for the passports as soon as you know you'll be traveling to another country. Make international travel a fun, learning experience for children by including them in the passport process. Explain why everyone needs to get the passport photos taken and let them help fill out the passport application by answering questions about themselves. Some countries also require visitors to have a visitor's visa to enter the country. Find out and apply for a visa, if needed.
  2. Get immunizations, if needed. Some countries require visitors to be immunized before entering the country. Get any immunizations for the entire family, as needed.
  3. Set strict guidelines and rules. For all ages of children, let them know what is expected of them during international travel. Show them on a map where you'll be traveling. Let children know that it is important that everyone stay together at all times or that each child needs to be with an adult. Whatever rules you decide on, communicate them often to the children.
  4. Provide everyone with emergency phone numbers. Write down emergency phone numbers for each family member or person traveling with you. Include phone numbers from home, your cell phone if it works in the country you're traveling, the U.S. Embassy phone number, and any other numbers of importance. Find a way to have these emergency numbers on the children at all times. Let them know to show the numbers to a policeman or shop owner if they become separated from the group.
  5. Learn the language with children. Before your international travel with children, take the time to learn a few phrases in the language where you'll be visiting. Children often learn a language easier than adults so work with them listening to tapes. Help children recognize a few written words too to make international travel safe and fun for all.
  6. Take some favorite games and toys. To keep children happy, be sure to pack a few favorites from home. Sometimes a tried and true book or game will settle a child who is tired from all the travel on the airplane and in strange hotels.
