Job candidates should always review the list of interview questions to ask an employer to develop topics to discuss with the hiring manager. An interview should be an interactive process, and using some of the interview questions to ask an employer will help you to engage the manager and get more information about the company. Here is a list of the basic interview questions to ask an employer and why you should ask them.
- "Why was the person previously in this position let go?" In many cases, this will be considered confidential company information that you won't be given at an interview. But if the previous employee was not performing up to company expectations or of the job was proving to be too difficult, then that is information you want to know. It helps you to better understand what the company will expect from you and the consequences if you do not perform up to standards.
- "What is the company culture like?" A business-like atmosphere balanced with a personal touch is probably the ideal culture. Having a business casual dress code balanced by a strict work schedule is a healthy workplace atmosphere. But it can also come down to personal preference. If you prefer a business formal dress code with a strict set of rules then you need to know if that is how the company operates.
- "Does this job have routine tasks, or is it a mix of routine and varied duties?" Some people prefer to start off in a company with a job that has a pre-determined routine. It helps them to get used to the company and figure out how to navigate company politics. Other people prefer to be challenged right from the start. This question will help you to find out what your tasks will be and whether or not the job is right for you.
- "What do I need to move up in the company?" You may be qualified for the job you are interviewing for with just a high school diploma. But in order to move up in the company, you will need a college degree. Finding out the criteria for advancement in the company is one of the critical interview questions to ask an employer.
- "Who will be doing my performance reviews?" This is an indirect way of finding out exactly how many people you will be reporting to in your position. The phrasing of the question is indirect, but the intent is very direct. The only purposes for this question are to find out the managerial structure of your position, and how the human resources department handles the review process.
