The problem is often an easy fix and is usually due to your silliness rather than the iPhone actually being broken. But they do break. If you physically mashed your machine in a fit of rage or stupidity, you are completely boned because that is not covered on any warranty plan. If some factory issue is at fault or you have destroyed the software beyond repair, well then, you might need the help from the so called “professionals” at the Apple store. But try the methods below first.

1. The obvious stuff first. When an iPhone won't charge you have to start out easy. Some wall sockets simply do not work. Try plugging it into another one. Another one that gets people are when they use their computer to charge the iPhone. While this works fine, it won't work at all if your computer goes to sleep. The iPhone stays on but the power supply is cut off.
2. Low battery look. The low battery icon can sometimes stay on driving you crazy because the iPhone won't charge. One trick that works on either Macs or Windows machines is to keep it plugged into the USB cable and reboot the machine. If nothing happens, unplug the USB charger from your computer, wait for your iPhone to go black and then plug it back in.
3. Extreme measures. A last resort trick is to hold down your 'Home' button for five seconds. While still holding the button, plug the iPhone back into your USB. If your iPhone still won't charge, you can always try either soft resetting your iPhone (hold the 'Sleep' and 'Home' buttons down until the screen goes black and release) or simply removing your SIM card and putting it back in. If nothing works, you may be forced to go the Apple store and deal with the Genius Bar or whatever the heck they call it.
